Political Economy of Mass Media
The political economy of mass media research-domain examines economic forces, corporate ownership, and political power that shapes media systems, influences production, distribution, and consumption of media content. Given its strong connections with sociology, economics, journalism, mass communication, and media studies, this domain embraces interdisciplinary theoretical perspectives and diverse methodological approaches. Such an initiative facilitates the generation and dissemination of knowledge on media industries, political communication, and the evolving relationship among media, society, and governance in Bangladesh and beyond. The vision of the research domain is to become a nationally recognized and internationally respected center of excellence in political economy of mass media research, advancing critical scholarship on the relationships among media, power, politics, economics, technology, and society to promote democratic governance, media accountability, and inclusive public communication in Bangladesh and beyond.
MISSION
The mission of the research domain is to advance interdisciplinary research on the media economics, politics, technology, and cultural forces that shape media systems, journalism, digital platforms, and communication industries. It also aims to generate evidence-based knowledge to inform public policy, media regulation, and democratic governance through rigorous theoretical and empirical research and examine media ownership patterns, political influences, corporate power, digital capitalism, platform governance, and information inequality from local, regional, and global perspectives.
