Abstract
Nowadays, social media has become one of the primary modes of daily communication for learners, which has also impacted their learning habits. Hence, learners' vocabulary acquisition has been affected both positively and negatively by exposure to social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, with significant English content consumption. The main objective of this research paper is to examine the contribution of social media use among tertiary-level students and to understand learners’ perceptions of this influence. The study will use a mixed-methods approach, collecting data from tertiary-level students through surveys and vocabulary-related questionnaires. The survey will be heavily focused on how frequently learners use social media, the kinds of applications they use, and how they use social media to help them learn new vocabulary. The findings of this research indicate that social media plays a crucial role in intensifying informal vocabulary learning. The learners revealed learning new words, slang, and expressions through daily online exposure. Nevertheless, constant usage of social media may negatively impact the use of standard English in academic contexts. Overall, the research suggests that social media can be an additional tool for vocabulary development when used in a balanced and guided manner.
